MSU Extension Ingham County

Jermo Reese is a Michigan State University Extension program instructor focused on 4-H animal science and equine education. He creates educational opportunities that connect young people with agriculture, animal science, leadership development, career exploration, and higher education. His programming serves youth, volunteers, and community partners across Michigan.

In his role, he also serves as the State Coordinator for the Michigan 4-H Proud Equestrians Program (PEP), supporting instructors and programs that provide equine experiences for youth with disabilities and other special needs. His work includes instructor development, statewide program support, educational resources, partnerships, and opportunities designed to make equine education more accessible and inclusive.

Jermo also supports Jr. MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences) programming, helping introduce middle and high school students to agriculture, natural resources, STEM, leadership, college readiness, and career pathways. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, he connects young people with Michigan State University resources and experiences that expand their awareness of available opportunities.

A special focus of Jermo's work is creating innovative and inclusive educational experiences that use horses as a pathway for learning, personal development, and exposure. He has developed programming that combines equine education with mindfulness, leadership, social-emotional learning, and career exploration. His educational philosophy is centered on the belief that “Exposure is the gateway to a young person’s potential. Because every child deserves a chance at a life-changing experience."

Prior to and alongside his work with MSU Extension, Jermo has been involved in youth development, agricultural education, equine programming, therapeutic horsemanship, community engagement, and nonprofit leadership. His experiences working with young people from diverse backgrounds continue to shape his commitment to creating opportunities for youth who may not traditionally have access to agriculture and equine experiences.

Jermo holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where he graduated summa cum laude. While working toward his doctoral degree, he remains dedicated to advancing his academic and professional expertise in youth development, agricultural studies, equine-assisted programs, and human health and well-being.
